Breakthrough Sound Design
Do any of these sound familiar?
You spend hours scrolling presets, hunting for the "perfect" sound, but nothing ever quite fits the track in your head.
You listen to your favorite artists and wonder, "How did they even make that?" while your own tracks sound thin, amateur, or "stock."
You’ve watched countless YouTube tutorials on "how to sound like Skrillex," but the moment you open a synth yourself, you forget everything and feel stuck.
You rely on "happy accidents" to make sounds. If you accidentally make something cool, you have no idea how to recreate it or fit it into a different key.
Looking at a synth like Serum feels overwhelming. All those knobs, wavetables, and modulation matrices look more like rocket science than music.
You desperately want a unique "signature sound" that fans recognize instantly, but you don't know how to develop it.
What you'll learn inside the course
Learn everything from basic synthesis to advanced sound design techniques. Here's a sneak peak of what you'll discover in Breakthrough Sound Design 👇
Subtractive Synthesis
The foundation of 90% of the synths you will ever use. Learn to sculpt raw waveforms into polished sounds by carving away frequencies. Master this, and you can pick up any synthesizer and know exactly how to use it.
Envelopes, ADSR, and LFOs
Static sounds are boring. Learn how to shape the volume and character of your sound over time using envelopes, and use LFOs to inject rhythm and movement so your patches breathe and evolve.
Core Sounds: Leads, Bass, Arps, Pads, Plucks and more.
Follow along as we design the essential "food groups" of electronic music from scratch, giving you a go-to library of sounds you built yourself.
Creative EQ
Move beyond basic mixing. Learn to use EQ as a creative sculpting tool—creating vowel sounds, fixing harsh resonances, and completely transforming the character of a sound using filters and bells.
Advanced Reverb & Delay
Turn simple dry signals into massive, atmospheric worlds. We show you how to use spatial effects not just to "place" a sound, but to turn short plucks into washing, ethereal pads and textures.
Distortion, Saturation & Waveshaping
This is how you get "that" aggressive sound. Learn to add warmth, grit, and harmonics to your bass and leads. We demystify the difference between soft clipping, hard clipping, and foldback distortion.
The Art of Sample Selection
Great sound design starts before you touch a knob. Learn how to identify and select the perfect source samples that blend seamlessly together, saving you hours of frustration during the mixing stage.
Sample-Based Synthesis
Blur the line between acoustic and electronic. Learn to turn any audio recording—from vocal chops to foley hits—into lush, playable instruments that sound completely organic and unique to you.
The Smart Approach to Layering
Stop stacking random presets and creating mud. Master the art of "Frequency Slotting" and learn exactly how to layer different textures to create a massive, wall-of-sound result that stays clean and punchy.
Replicating Sounds in Your Head
The holy grail of production. We teach you a systematic workflow to analyze the sound you hear in your imagination and translate it onto the grid, finally closing the gap between your taste and your technical ability.
FM Synthesis
Demystify Frequency Modulation to create the metallic basses, aggressive growls, and glass-like bells that standard subtractive synthesis simply can't produce.
Granular Synthesis
Enter the microscopic world of sound. Learn to tear audio apart into tiny "grains" and reconstruct them into glitchy, sci-fi textures and evolving cloudscapes perfect for modern electronic music.

Meet Your Expert Instructor
Aden Russell
Hey, I’m Aden. I have over 12 years of music production experience, and head up the blog and video content here at EDMProd.
Outside of that, I produce liquid drum & bass under the alias Artsea, and have also produced many other genres over the years, such as lofi hip-hop, deep house and more.
I’ve been teaching music production for many years, and am excited to show you what you’ll be learning inside Breakthrough Sound Design.
Who is this course for?
- You hear incredible sounds in your head, but when you try to recreate them, you end up frustrated and settling for something "close enough."
- You have gigabytes of Splice samples and Serum packs, but you don't know how to tweak them to fit your track, or how to build them from scratch.
- You are tired of sounding like everyone else and want to build a sonic identity that listeners instantly recognize as yours.
- Move past "trial and error" knob-twisting and understand exactly why a sound behaves the way it does.
- If you just downloaded your DAW yesterday and are still figuring out how to play a clip or navigate the interface, this is not for you yet. We recommend starting with EDM Foundations first.
- You're looking for a magic bullet and don't want to put in the time to learn the principles.
- If you can already reverse-engineer any preset you hear and fully understand FM, wavetable, and subtractive synthesis, you might find the early modules too fundamental.
